IELTS Band Score Calculator

Convert your Listening and Reading raw scores out of 40, average all four skills with the official rounding rules, and estimate your Writing band — for both Academic and General Training.

Overall band

Calculate your overall IELTS band score

The overall band is the average of your four section scores, rounded to the nearest half band — with .25 and .75 always rounding up, never down.

Overall band score calculator

Enter your four section scores — real or predicted — to get your overall band.

Overall band

6.5 + 6.5 + 6.0 + 6.5 = 25.5 · average 6.38 → rounds to 6.5

What do you need on test day?

Set your target, add any scores you already know, and see exactly what the rest must be.

Overall 7.0 needs a four-section total of 27 or more.

That's an average of 6.75 per section — for example 7.0 in every section is enough.

Also 40 questions at one mark each — but Academic and General Training use different tables. GT texts are easier, so the same band needs more correct answers.

Writing

IELTS Writing band score calculator

Examiners score each task on four criteria in whole bands; the task average rounds down to a half band, and Task 2 counts twice as much as Task 1.

Task 1

Letter (GT) or report (Academic) · one third of the score

6.0

Average 6.25 → rounds down to 6.0 (examiners award whole bands per criterion; the task average rounds down to the half band).

Task 2

Essay · two thirds of the score

6.5

Average 6.5 = 6.5 (examiners award whole bands per criterion; the task average rounds down to the half band).

Estimated Writing band

(6.0 + 6.5 + 6.5) ÷ 3, rounded down — Task 2 counts twice. IELTS doesn't publish this final rounding step, so treat the result as a close estimate.

The rules

How IELTS calculates your band score

Three mechanics decide your result: the raw-score tables, the criteria averages, and the overall rounding rule. Here they are without the mystery.

Listening & Reading

Your raw score — correct answers out of 40 — maps to a band through a conversion table. IELTS publishes anchor points (30 correct ≈ Band 7 in Listening and Academic Reading) and calibrates each test version around them, which is why boundaries drift a mark between sittings.

Writing & Speaking

An examiner awards whole bands on four criteria, and the average rounds down to the half band — 7, 7, 7, 6 averages 6.75 but scores 6.5. In Writing, Task 2 then carries double weight, so the essay is where your band is really decided.

The overall average

The four section bands are averaged and rounded to the nearest half band — and here the rounding favours you: .25 lifts to the next half band, .75 lifts to the next whole band.
