Task 2 Essay · advantages disadvantages

Some car manufacturers are developing vehicles that can drive themselves without human control, and such cars may soon be common on our roads. Do the advantages of driverless cars outweigh the disadvantages?

Fully autonomous vehicles, once confined to science fiction, are now being tested on public roads and may become commonplace within a generation. While driverless technology promises remarkable gains in safety and accessibility, it also raises economic and ethical questions that society has barely begun to answer. The strongest argument for autonomous cars is safety. The overwhelming majority of road accidents are caused by human error, whether fatigue, distraction, intoxication or simple misjudgement, and machines suffer from none of these weaknesses. A computer never checks its phone at the wheel, and it reacts in milliseconds. Beyond safety, driverless vehicles would transform mobility for people who currently cannot drive: the elderly, the disabled and the young could travel independently rather than depending on others. Commuters, , would recover countless hours now wasted behind the wheel, and coordinated fleets of autonomous taxis could reduce congestion and the need for city-centre parking. the disadvantages deserve equal attention. The most immediate is employment: millions of people worldwide earn their living as taxi, bus and lorry drivers, and their jobs would disappear within a decade or two of widespread adoption. There are also unresolved ethical dilemmas. If a crash is unavoidable, whose safety should the vehicle prioritise, and who bears legal responsibility when software makes a fatal mistake? , any vehicle controlled by computers and connected to a network can, in principle, be hacked, turning a convenience into a security threat. , the advantages of driverless cars ultimately outweigh the disadvantages, since preventing thousands of deaths each year is a benefit that little else can match. , governments must prepare now, by retraining displaced drivers, clarifying legal liability and setting strict cybersecurity standards, so that the transition enriches society rather than destabilising it.
