Task 2 Essay · opinion
Some people believe that employees who work from home are more productive than those who work in an office. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
The shift towards working from home has become one of the most significant changes in modern employment. While some argue that remote employees achieve more than their office-based colleagues, I only partly agree: home working boosts productivity for certain people and tasks, but not for everyone.
On the one hand, there are clear reasons why remote workers can accomplish more. They avoid long commutes, which gives them extra time and energy for their actual duties, and they escape the constant interruptions of a busy office, such as meetings and noisy colleagues. Many people also work best at unusual hours, and home working allows them to organise the day around the times when they concentrate most effectively. A programmer, for instance, may write far better code alone at night than in a crowded open-plan office in the afternoon.
On the other hand, this advantage does not apply to every kind of job or personality. Roles which depend on teamwork, such as designing a new product, often suffer when discussions happen only through the screens. Furthermore, some employees lack the discipline to work independently; at home they are tempted by household chores, television and social media, and their output falls as a result. Junior staff in particular can struggle, because they learn much of their job by observing experienced colleagues, which is difficult remotely.
In conclusion, I believe remote work increases productivity mainly for self-disciplined employees whose tasks require concentration rather than collaboration. For team-based roles and inexperienced workers, the office remains a more effective environment. Therefore, instead of assuming that home working suits everybody, companies should offer flexible arrangements which match the nature of each role.
