Task 2 Essay · opinion
Some people believe that the growing use of artificial intelligence in the workplace will do more harm than good. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Artificial intelligence is rapidly moving from science fiction into everyday working life, drafting documents, screening job applicants and even diagnosing illnesses. Some fear that this shift will ultimately damage more than it improves. I disagree with this pessimistic view: although the risks are real, I believe the benefits of AI in the workplace will outweigh the harm, provided the technology is introduced thoughtfully.
The most obvious advantage is productivity. AI systems can process in seconds tasks that once consumed hours of human effort, such as summarising reports or analysing sales data. This does not simply enrich employers; it frees workers from repetitive drudgery and allows them to concentrate on judgement, creativity and human interaction, which machines still handle poorly. In healthcare, for instance, algorithms that read medical scans give doctors more time with patients while catching abnormalities that human eyes occasionally miss.
Admittedly, the disadvantages deserve serious attention. Certain jobs, particularly routine clerical and manufacturing roles, will disappear, and the people displaced are often those least equipped to retrain. There are also dangers of over-reliance: an AI system trained on biased data can quietly discriminate in hiring or lending, and errors may go unnoticed because the software appears authoritative. These problems, however, are arguments for regulation and investment in retraining rather than for rejecting the technology itself. History suggests that societies which manage such transitions well, as many did during earlier waves of automation, end up with more jobs rather than fewer, though the adjustment period can be painful.
In conclusion, I am convinced that artificial intelligence will bring greater efficiency, safety and job satisfaction to most workplaces. The genuine risks of unemployment and bias should be addressed through government policy and corporate responsibility, not by resisting a technology whose benefits are already evident.
