Task 2 Essay · discussion
Some people think that the news media has become far too influential in modern society, while others argue that it plays an essential role in keeping the public informed. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
The media is a powerful force in today's world, reaching millions of people every single day. While some argue that it has gained too much influence over society, others maintain that it performs a vital function by keeping citizens informed. This essay will examine both perspectives before giving my own opinion.
Those who are worried about the media's power raise several valid concerns. Firstly, news outlets are often owned by large corporations that may promote a particular political or commercial agenda, meaning the information people receive is not always balanced. In addition, the media has a strong ability to shape public opinion by choosing which stories to highlight and which to ignore. For instance, constant coverage of a single scandal can distract the population from more important issues, which suggests that this influence can be harmful.
On the other hand, supporters of the media point out that a free press is essential in any healthy democracy. Without journalists, ordinary people would have no way of knowing what their governments and companies are doing. Investigative reporting has exposed corruption and abuse many times, and this holds powerful people accountable. Furthermore, the media educates the public about health, science and global events, which helps individuals make better decisions in their daily lives.
In my view, both arguments contain some truth, but I believe the media remains more beneficial than harmful. The solution is not to reduce its influence but to encourage people to think critically and read from a variety of sources. When citizens compare different reports, they are less likely to be manipulated.
To conclude, although the media undoubtedly holds considerable power, its role in informing and protecting society is too important to lose, and responsible consumption is the key to using it wisely.
