Task 2 Essay · opinion
Space exploration costs billions of dollars every year. Some people believe that this money would be better spent on solving problems here on Earth. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Every year, governments spend billions of dollars on space programs, and many people argue that this money should be used for solving problems on our own planet instead. I mostly agree with this view, although I accept that space research brings some benefits to society.
The main reason I support this opinion is that there are many urgent problems on Earth which need money now. Millions of people still suffer from poverty, hunger and diseases that could be prevented. For example, the cost of one rocket launch could build hundreds of schools or hospitals in developing countries. When people are dying because they do not have clean water, it seems wrong to spend such huge amounts on exploring other planets. Governments have a duty to look after their citizens first before they invest in projects which may only give results after many decades.
On the other hand, it is true that space technology has given us some useful inventions. Satellites, for instance, help us to predict the weather and to communicate across the world, and these things improve daily life for everyone. Some people also believe that humans will need to live on other planets in the future because of the climate change. However, I think these benefits do not justify the enormous costs, because most of the space budget is spent on missions that have little practical value for ordinary people.
In conclusion, although space exploration has produced several valuable technologies, I believe that the money would be better spent on solving immediate problems such as poverty and health care, which affect millions of people's lives today.
