Task 1 Academic · process
The diagram below shows the process by which recycled glass bottles are collected, processed, and turned into new glass products. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
The diagram illustrates the various stages involved in recycling used glass bottles and transforming them into brand-new glass products. Overall, it is a linear, cyclical process comprising eight distinct steps, beginning with the collection of discarded bottles by consumers and culminating in the manufacture of fresh products that re-enter the market.
At the outset, used glass bottles are deposited by households into designated recycling bins, from where they are gathered by collection trucks and transported to a processing facility. Upon arrival, the glass is sorted, most notably by colour, and any contaminants such as labels, plastic caps or metal rings are carefully removed to ensure purity.
In the subsequent stage, the cleaned glass is fed into a crushing machine, which breaks it down into small fragments known as cullet. This cullet is then washed thoroughly before being combined with raw materials, namely sand, soda ash and limestone, in precise proportions.
Once the mixture has been prepared, it is transferred to a furnace, where it is heated to an extremely high temperature of approximately 1,500 degrees Celsius until it melts into a molten liquid. Following this, the molten glass is poured into moulds and shaped into the desired forms, typically new bottles or jars.
Finally, after the moulded items have cooled and solidified, they are packaged and distributed to shops for sale, at which point the entire cycle can begin anew.
