Overall, the car was the dominant mode of transport in Toronto and Melbourne, whereas commuters in Amsterdam and Osaka relied far more on cycling and public transport respectively. Toronto had the highest rate of car use, with 68% of workers driving to their jobs, and Melbourne was not far behind at 61%. In both cities, public transport accounted for roughly a quarter of journeys, while cycling was rare, at only 3% and 5% respectively. The pattern in the other two cities was strikingly different. In Amsterdam, 42% of commuters cycled to work, which was the highest figure for any transport type in the table, and just 24% travelled by car. Osaka, meanwhile, recorded the greatest reliance on public transport, at 55%. Walking was a minor mode everywhere, although Osaka's figure of 12% was noticeably higher than the 4% that was recorded in Toronto.
