Task 1 Academic · pie chart
The two pie charts below show the proportion of household expenditure by category in a country in 1990 and 2020. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
The two pie charts compare how households in a particular country divided their spending across six categories — housing, food, transport, healthcare, entertainment and other — in 1990 and 2020.
Overall, while food and housing remained the two largest areas of expenditure throughout, the period saw a marked shift away from food towards housing and healthcare, reflecting changing priorities over the three decades.
In 1990, food accounted for the greatest share of the household budget, at 30 per cent, closely followed by housing at 25 per cent. Transport made up a further 15 per cent, whereas healthcare and entertainment each represented a modest 8 per cent, with the remaining 14 per cent classified as other.
By 2020, the picture had altered considerably. Housing had overtaken food to become the dominant category, rising to 32 per cent, while the proportion spent on food had fallen substantially to 20 per cent. Healthcare had also grown noticeably, doubling to 16 per cent, which suggests an ageing population or rising medical costs.
Meanwhile, spending on transport dipped slightly to 12 per cent, and entertainment edged up marginally to 10 per cent. The share allocated to other purposes remained relatively stable, decreasing only slightly to 10 per cent over the twenty-year span.
